Homemade concrete

Wanna know what happens when you make homemade lavender soap and accidentally DOUBLE the amount of lye necessary for 18 bars of soap? You get lavender smelling concrete that gets hot enough to melt the dividers in your soap mold tray. I have a headache of monumental proportion as well. Guess lye fumes aren't good for you. Go figure huh? Anyway, once my soap making utensils have been washed I'm going to try his again and hope for better results using the correct amount of lye this time. I ordered new soap molds and the saying about live and learn is very true for today's experiment. *sigh*

  1. We still have beef tallow in the freezer ,when you talk about making it I think to myself,I should get that out & make more.I need to get more lye & the only place to get it around here is an out of the way place. The dh had to use his scroll saw to cut it in pieces, was yours that hard?phylliso

  2. OMG! That is awful! Good luck with the next batch. I have always wanted to make soap from lye but have been chicken from all the "warnings" about it. Knowing me I would melt my eyebrows off or something. Is it as difficult as it seems?

  3. My soap was concrete-like to be sure. I didn't have to cut it out with power tools but I did have to chip away at it with kitchen knives. It's not a difficult process but I realized that I really need to have everything pre-measured and ready to go before I start mixing ingredients. The lye scares me too. I have on gloves and eye protection when I work with it. I didn't do another batch yet but this weekend I have plans for sure. :)
